Teaching for Tolerance
The Oslo Coalition project on School Education, Tolerance, and Freedom of Religion or Belief seeks to develop a global interdisciplinary network to contribute to the following up of the recommendations of the Final Document of The 2001 Madrid Consultative Conference on School Education in Relation with Freedom of Religion or Belief. The objectives are:
- To contribute to the development and dissemination of material for education about freedom of religion or belief as a human right and about tolerance with regard to religion or belief.
- To evaluate different educational models (civic education, education about religion or belief etc.) from around the world to see if they contribute to tolerance and understanding between people with different beliefs and worldviews, and whether they are in compliance with international human rights standards on freedom of religion or belief.
The Oslo Coalition is aware that education for tolerance is only a part of a wider spectrum of education for human rights and education in peace competence. Competence in tolerance and peacebuilding is a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Knowledge alone is insufficient. Oslo Coalition therefore works to spread competence on how teachers can inspire the right attitudes in their pupils, both by their own examples and through the educational methods they choose; and how teachers can train up the skills their pupils will need in order to practice tolerance, and actively manage their own conflicts and attitudes.
For more about the Oslo Coalition Teaching for Tolerance project, see the working group strategy document and the working group plan of action.
