Teaching
for tolerance, respect and recognition
From September 2nd - 5th 2004, the Oslo Coalition on Freedom of
Religion or Belief and the Norwegian Committee of UNESCO organized
a global meeting of experts in the field of tolerance education,
intercultural education and human rights education related to religion
or belief.
The meeting
was held in Oslo, Norway, as a part of the Oslo Coalition project
"Teaching for Tolerance and Freedom of Religion or Belief"
project. The project aims at turning into practice the aims and
recommendations of the 2001 Madrid Consultative conference on Tolerance,
Non-Discrimination and Freedom of Religion or Belief in Relation
with School Education.
More specifically,
the September meeting aimed at:
- identifying
and examining obstacles as well as promising pedagogical approaches
to fostering tolerance, respect and recognition of "the other"
in relation with religion or belief through school education,
- exploring
the relationship between intercultural / interfaith education
(learning about each other), human rights education (learning
about freedom of religion or belief) and other civic education
(for developing tolerance, respect and recognition), and
- providing
a forum for exchange of ideas, experience and material between
educators, experts and decision makers in these fields.
